Dollar down, gold up
6.15 a.m. ET (1016 GMT) October 16, 1998
LONDON (AP) — The dollar fell against other major currencies in European trading today. Gold rose.

Dollar rates compared with late Thursday:

—1.6145 German marks, down from 1.6253

—114.70 Japanese yen, down from 117.22

—1.3107 Swiss francs, down from 1.3210

—5.4152 French francs, down from 5.4483

—1.8214 Dutch guilders, down from 1.8330

—1,598.09 Italian lire, down from 1,608.00

—1.5414 Canadian dollars, down from 1.5484

The British pound was quoted at $1.7026, down from $1.7036.

Gold dealers in London fixed a recommended price of $300.45 bid per troy ounce at midmorning, up from $298.50 on Thursday.

In Zurich the bid price was $300.30, up from $298.20.

Gold rose $3.80 to $300.15 in Hong Kong.

Silver opened in London at $4.95 bid per troy ounce, up from $4.89.
