Ten VCs Who Matter
By Mark Gimein

Vinod Khosla
Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers
Net Hits: Excite

The Story: Khosla, the former CEO of Sun Microsystems, has had only a fraction of colleague John Doerr's publicity. Other venture capitalists, however, give him equal credit for Kleiner's string of Internet successes. For Excite and Concentric Networks, Khosla threw in seed investments of just $200,000 each, but added a whole lot of work. When he first met with the founders of Excite, he wondered if the search technology would scale. Excite said it couldn't afford a hard drive that would be big enough to test scalability. Khosla called his office and had one delivered.

The Scoop: Khosla brought together the heads of 10 newspaper companies in a meeting that resulted in a major online alliance, the New Century Network, which unfortunately is now defunct, an idea that had a moment of glory before the Net moved ahead of it. But Khosla now has the media bug in a really big way. Look for some serious online media plays from his direction.

Hi JPR

I will check that information. I would not like to have any interaction with IRS <G>, so I would stay out of stock for a while.

Have a great weekend and Happy Deepavali to you all.

Regards
Ravi
