You lost me. We are both talking about a 4-8 GB primary harddrive. I
suggested dividing it so that backups could be done on smaller media

Ok...we are on the same page here. I thought you thought I meant 4-8 for partitions on the drive. I was mistaken.

Didn't you say the Mac will be networked? Why do you need a removable
device on the NT trading machine? Why not send Drive Image backup files
through the network to the Mac JAZ drive?

Yes, the mac and PC will be networked... but only for purposes of modem sharing. I don't want to get involved with Mac/PC file translation software, it looks like a complicated quagmier of two very different filing systems. Its not worth it to me to endure this added overhead when I can spend < $500 for a separate tape/removeable system isolated to the PC. Records data is entered manually off confirmation and account statements.

<<<Whats to save?>>>
if there is nothing to save you do not need daily backup IMO.

Sorry ..I spoke in haste... see below

if there is nothing to save you do not need daily backup IMO. What needs to be Fail Safe?

As a true *operations* computer, other than the OS configuration and accompanying utilities such as the Powerquest products, nothing. But the OS configuration and accompanying utilities such as the Powerquest products is substantial, isn't it?
I do want auxillary backup systems in addition to KOT in place for these important items. True , if I partition this stuff on the primary drive those auxillary backup needs are greatly diminished in capacity (size). Then there is the end-of-day 'technical analysis" sw that I briefly forgot about when I said, to my current embarressment, " Whats to Save". That area of sw includes alot of historical data that must be saved to the HDD. This machine is not solely an operational machine as we previously defined 'operational'

Sorry I mislead.... spec'ing this new machine out has left me a little information overloaded.....

ZeusPaul and All,

good idea but one would need a NT Server to provide an IFS (Installable File System) for Drive Image to access in order to backup and restore. I don't beleive a dos boot with think MS networking client can talk to Mac Networks without a gateway or NFS. NT server includes MAC/NT network gateway function. You could use NFS as well but would require special ($$) client and server software. Cloning machines over the network with a boot floppy and Drive Image and Ghost is an effective method of maintaing larger #'s of computers. our IS department installs thousands of machines a year using ghost and MS network boot floppies. They make an image for each machine and ghost will adjust the parition size to the hard drive during restore.

Spanning multiple media is also an acceptable idea for Manual backups but your daily data backup should fit on one media for reliabilities sake.
