The strange thing is that gold moved only $3 or $4 up but it seems grains have an explosive rally!!

Are there problems with the harvest or winter planting?? or is it because the dollar is sinking again.

Fishy? Yes. AG is usually acting only after long deliberation.
The timing looks like it was intended to optimize the effect on the market.

AG seems to have been in a big hurry, almost in a panic.
Nobody seems to know for sure what kind of disaster that was/is looming.

From NY-Times:



Acting on his own authority after consulting by telephone with members
of the Federal Reserve's policy-making committee, Alan Greenspan,
the chairman, reduced the Federal funds target for the overnight lending rate between banks by a quarter of a percentage point, to 5 percent.


Obviously there was not even time to call a meeting.
