Agree. I like that guy from Iowa, the Republican, Leach? I think it is. He seems like he has quite a bit of integrity.

I wouldn't want to get into the "honest politician" thing, having had an unfortunate previous experience on that issue (Hi mrknowitall), but this brings to mind Advice and Consent : Clarence Thomas, Robert Bork and the Intriguing History of the Supreme Court's Nomination Battles by Senator Paul Simon. On that subject, a quote from Simon on Thomas:

I have a chapter in there on who told the truth, and I think while public opinion is still that Clarence Thomas told the truth, I think the evidence is pretty overwhelming that Anita Hill told the truth. booknotes.org

I won't restate my opinion on the matter, having been called a liar by the substantial and factual Mr. Vaughn a sufficient number of times.

Other titles of interest by Sen. Simon: Glass House : Politics and Morality in the Nation's Capital and Poison Politics : Are Negative Campaigns Destroying Democracy? His books don't seem to sell very well, unfortunately.

Cheers, Dan.

>>> Paul Simon (IL) retired senator

Maybe. Better than most, but one hears things.

25 years ago I was deep into politics. I even got elected to something inconsequential and got into the party machinery. So I met a lot of the political icons of the time, and some more than a few times.

Even the 'honest' ones made me feel greasy after a handshake, whether left or right. It's just that none of them can stop manipulating for a second. It's a personality thing.

The best you can hope for is that they have a real agenda which they will try to move forward instead of selling it to the highest bidder at every turn. Corruption is a far more powerful influence on events than right-left ideology.

Cheers,
Chaz
