If tape is in the mix for the
complete harddrive backup CDRW certainly should be considered in lieu of a SparQ

Tape and CDRW.... yes certainly a strong possibility... I need to layout these permutations on a big old-fashioned sheet of papaer so I can see them all at once. I gonna work along that line over the weekend. I really need to see them all layed out before me. I'm a visual type thinker and I know this would be helpful at this point with so many valid possibilities.

G onna hit thr hay now, east coast time you know....

I argued against using CDRW as the only backup solution. If tape is in the mix for the complete harddrive backup CDRW certainly should be considered in lieu of a SparQ in a tape/SparQ setup

Disagree since you can't backup and restore images from drive image to CDRW or Tape. removable carts are unfortunately the only choice for this. Why not CDRW?

If tape is in the mix
for the complete harddrive backup....

I agree with ZP on the size limitation of cd-rw being problematic enough to put tape in the number 1 spot for complete backups. The only product mentioned thus far that for me would be competitive with tape for complete backups would be the upcoming Terastor 10gig. Its $800 price tag is a negative and is a new technology as far as I know, although others with more knowledge about backup hardware may have input as to its newnest and lack of proven reliability. All I know is its some kind magneto-optical hybrid, whatever that is. Existing MO devices are very well recieved as per ZP experience with the HP but not others.

Barring further developements ie waiting for the thing to hit the market and seeing initial user reactions, which could be 3+ months from now, tape is a done deal for me.

On the selective daily backup front cd-rw seems to be out of the picture as per Seans mentioning that Drive Image won't work with it. In that case I think a Jaz2 would be a prudent choice.

In the near-term future for this catagory are the 2 gig ORB Drive from Castlewood Systems ( anyone have an opinion about the ORB without having used it) and also the 4.7 gig Syquest Quest. Again a waiting period is required with these new devices.

I'm thinking out loud here.. get a 8gig+- tapestor now with the new machine assembly, forget about the terrastor it's too expensive anyway. And just backup to tape for awhile til the ORB and Quest reports come out... if still in doubt then, just pickup a Jaz2 .....

Thats my plan for backup implementation on a new machine to be built..... real soon.... as Street Walker once said.
