Romanian Health Ministry authorizes drug against impotence

October 16, 1998

BUCHAREST, ROMANIA - AP World News via NewsEdge Corporation : The anti-impotence pill Viagra has been legally authorized in Romania, officials said Thursday.

The Health Ministry gave its approval Wednesday but is only allowing the pills to be sold through drugstores on a doctor's recommendation and following a medical investigation, said Ion Fulga, head of the ministry's pharmacy department.

''We have to be sure any secondary effect of Viagra is avoided,'' Fulga said.

Viagra will be available in Romania in the next four to five weeks, said Dr. Gabriel Hanganu, Romanian manager for Pfizer Inc., which produces Viagra. The price of one pill will be about 150,000 lei (dlrs 16) _ about half the current black-market price, he said.
