What a great article. BTW, it's interesting that according to WSJ Philips/Lucent handset joint venture may be dismantled. Either Philips buys out Lucent, or more likely, they will withdraw from the commercial market alltogether and start selling components. The global market share of this venture is negligible, but they do have 4% of the European market, so withdrawal would be good news for Nokia. Apparently Siemens has canceled their CDMA phone project as well. It looks like a beginning of a shake-out. Alcatel and Siemens are probably reviewing their handset options right now.

Nice to see that Nokia is starting to build their first W-CDMA network in China. They have an opportunity to demonstrate the GSM upgrade technology to the Chinese. Since Nokia already has W-CDMA handset prototypes they are far ahead of the W-CDMA pack... to speak nothing of the CDMA2000, which is apparently still on the drawing board.
