CBS to Broadcast Nov. 18 Episode of 'CHICAGO HOPE' in HDTV Network Makes Broadcast History with First Ever Telecast of a Primetime Series Episode In Revolutionary New HDTV Format October 15, 1998 01:00 PM NEW YORK, Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- CBS Corporation announced today that the Nov. 18 episode of the hit medical drama CHICAGO HOPE will be recorded and broadcast in high definition television on the CBS Television Network. The telecast marks the first ever presentation of a primetime series episode in the revolutionary new HDTV format. The Nov. 18 broadcast affirms CBS's commitment to the HDTV revolution. CBS recently announced that it would be the first network to present NFL football live in the HDTV format this season, beginning with the Nov. 8 game between the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets. The CHICAGO HOPE broadcast will utilize Sony Electronics HDC-750 high definition studio cameras, HDCAM(TM) HDW-500 VTRs, and HDM-14E5u high definition monitor supplied by Plus 8 Video with post production at Laser Pacific. The episode will be transmitted in 1080i, the highest resolution HDTV format. By Nov. 18, 11 CBS Owned and affiliated stations will be digitally equipped to transmit high definition television, enabling them to carry the episode. They are: CBS Owned WCBS-TV New York, KCBS-TV Los Angeles, KPIX-TV San Francisco and KYW-TV Philadelphia, as well as CBS affiliates WUSA-TV Washington D.C., KHOU-TV Houston, WGNX-TV Atlanta, WKRC-TV Cincinnati, WBNS-TV Columbus, WBTV Charlotte and WRAL-TV Raleigh. The Nov. 18 storyline was singled out for HDTV experimentation by series producer 20th Century Fox Television and equipment supplier Sony Electronics because it involves a news crew covering the death of a celebrity -- allowing HDTV tape to give the show an authentic news style look. "We wanted to shoot this episode on tape instead of our usual way, which is film," explained Bill D'Elia, CHICAGO HOPE's executive producer. "We are departing from the norm to tell a story that appears to be from the point of view of a video crew visiting our hospital. The latitude that HDTV gives us in controlling the look is quite amazing and the audience is not only in for a treat with this episode, but will notice the difference in the way the show is presented." CHICAGO HOPE, broadcast Wednesdays , is produced by David E. Kelley Productions, in association with 20th Century Fox Television. John Tinker and Bill D'Elia are executive producers. Additional announcements regarding HDTV programming plans on the CBS Television Network will be forthcoming. SOURCE CBS Corporation
