Having done business with Egghead in the past, it is no surprise that they are doing well. Their Auction site is Surplus Direct, which is the company that took Egghead out of retail storefronts by demonstrating the profitability of OnLine sales.
Although Egghead historically had some problems, particularly creating an efficient management and merchandising system, Surplus Direct was always very efficient and fast in their response to the consumer marketplace. This is essential in the fast-paced changes of the computer products industry. One of the biggest liabilities to retailers, distributors, and manufacturers in the Computer products business, is the change in technologies and/or prices, and their affect on finished goods inventories spread over multiple retail locations.
The "backdraft" affect of major tech or price moves is horrendous to all parties. It normally becomes a fight between vendors and customers, as to which part of the distribution channel is going to take the hit of markdowns. This delays considerably the process of keeping inventories current.
Egghead may be one of the templates for success in the future.
