Not quite the best comparison to make. In the chip business, technology sells, especially in the add-on market. All of the companies that were listed had or still have a chance to come up with the next best thing. There are fabs that can make the chips for them so they do not need an expensive assembly line.

What 3dfx (and they other main competition that was mentioned in the conference call, I would've added neomagic to Ballard's list) have done is stay ahead of the other firms through better products and better marketing. Without a hit product to give them enough money for the next generation, most of the competition has been leaving the market. This may not mean all that much for market share or units sold (face it, the big companies always had most of that), but it does allow more flexibility is pricing for the survivors.

Well then I guess you just don't want to give away your ATI shares then. You could just say 3dfx has no competition since they are the
only one who makes a deditcated 3D graphics addin chip where everyone
else is 2D/3D.

If the John Deere does the job were the Ferrari doesn't then it is
a sale. There must be lots of farmers who said , "Boy I wish I could buy a Ferrari, but it would not do much good driving in the mud from
home to the field."

>>> Then i guess that If Porsche see the LADA as competition you are right. But i'll make some phone calls to ask Ferrari if one John Deere tractor sold is one car that Ferrari didn't sell. :)<<<
