20th Century Insurance Co. Ensures Delivery of 25 Tons of Relief Materials to Hurricane Mitch Victims in Central America

40-Year Tradition of Employee Volunteerism and Outreach Extends to Emergency Aid for Honduras

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 27, 1998-- Continuing a 40-year tradition of philanthropic and community support, 20th Century Insurance Co. has ensured that more than 25 tons of much-needed emergency aid and medical supplies will reach Hurricane Mitch disaster victims in Honduras Saturday.

The company's $43,000 contribution literally will get the shipment in the air, co-funding the airlift for the delivery of medicine, clinical supplies, shelter materials and bulk foods to Honduras. The shipment is scheduled to leave Los Angeles International Airport by charter aircraft on Saturday, Nov. 28.

''We are proud to partner with others in our community to help Central Americans devastated by Hurricane Mitch who are in desperate need of aid,'' said William L. Mellick, 20th Century president and chief executive officer.

''And I'm most proud of the 20th Century family of employees, who are the driving force and spirit behind all of our outreach and community support efforts.''

Hurricane Mitch struck Central America the last week of October, leaving more than 3 million people homeless and destroying 80 percent of the crops in Honduras and Nicaragua. This relief effort is a collaboration between Operation USA, the California Community Foundation and Airline Ambassadors.

The supplies will be distributed in country by Save The Children; the International Medical Corps; and the Episcopal Diocese of San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

The Hurricane Mitch relief effort is the latest in a long history of community involvement and outreach for 20th Century. The company has an extensive Community Support Program, which assists providers of a wide variety of nonprofit human services throughout California.

For example, 20th Century employees contributed a record-breaking $400,000 to the United Way in 1998, with an 80 percent participation rate for the company. In the past five years alone, 20th Century employees have contributed a total of $1.8 million to the United Way.
