Mark, it comes down to one thing, institutional investors do not want to hold any small stocks that appear to be illiquid. Look at this spooky parallel of two small telecom suppliers, both over 10 years old, both well run,ORTL and HLIT.
techstocks.com
But on the other hand TLAB had fantastic earnings,it seems SONET is strong and DWDM will run well with SONET under it at Layer One. HLIT is firing on almost all cylinders, except for Asia. I am not sure how Canada is going right now,but the US market is heating up.
Its just plain fear of the unknown, and to these young institutional guns its better to hold INTC,MSFT,LUcy,CSCO than any small company. Who wants to take a chance, not those guys. Well we need a leader to pull the fiber optics companies up by the bootstraps, its not going to be CIEN,maybe LUcy or NT will.

Mark, well now there are three,GIC has a system that sounds very similar to HLIT's. Too bad we don't have a patent on it.

General Instrument(R) Announces Shipment of Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) Transport System To Major North American Markets
GI's OmniStar(R) DWDM System Being Deployed in Chicago and Grand Rapids
HORSHAM, Pa., Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- General Instrument's Transmission Network Systems (TNS) business unit announces the first shipments of its OmniStar(R) DWDM platform into Chicago and Grand Rapids. This deployment will be among the first and largest of DWDM systems deployed for cable operators in the world. This first rollout will be a full eight-wavelength system. The first phase of this deployment will pass close to 200,000 homes in Chicago and Grand Rapids.

GI's DWDM system is unique in that it is the first to use high performance externally modulated transmitters for forward path narrowcast signals. This technology provides greater payload capacity, which gives system operators more flexibility in network planning. ''GI has developed this advanced DWDM platform as part of our strategy to provide market leading technology and total system solutions for HFC network operators,'' said David Grubb, Vice President of Marketing for GI's TNS business unit.

GI's DWDM technology will allow system operators to economically target advanced services such as telephony, data, and video on demand, down to a single node if necessary; with all routing activities taking place at the headend. At the same time, DWDM adds capacity to existing fiber architectures, lowers operational costs through the reduction of electronic components, and reduces space usage in the headend or primary hub locations.

So now there are three, and I bet SFA is coming along real soon with one. So there are the four companies,ANTC,HLIT,GIC and SFA. Soon ORTL in collaboration with Bellcore in their Tellium joint venture will be deploying one commercially. So there will be 5 major companies with similar MetroDWDM systems. ANTC in Seattle,GIC in Chicago and Grand Rapids,HLIT is in Dallas,Baton Rouge,Vancouver,WA,Tacoma(I think),and another undisclosed Louisiana City. Well HLIT is in Chicago also with 21st Century.

ANTEC Wins Contract To Supply Headend To Home Network Solutions For CTC'S New Build In Spain
Contract Marks the Launch of DWDM Technology in Europe
NORCROSS, Ga., Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- ANTEC Corp. (Nasdaq: ANTC - news) has announced today that Cable i Televisio de Catalunya (CTC) has selected ANTEC as a prime supplier for its optical transmission, RF amplifiers, RF management and element management equipment needs. ANTEC will also supply its Laser Link(R) Transplex(TM) System, making CTC the first European operator to deploy 1550 nm dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) technology. CTC plans to complete the multi-million dollar new build, which will serve approximately 2 million homes throughout Catalunya, during the next seven to 10 years.

This contract marks a milestone for DWDM technology and an additional significant deployment of ANTEC's 870 MHz pedestal nodes and amplifiers. The Transplex System combines DWDM technology with 1550 nm transmitters and Erbium Doped Fibre Amplifiers (EDFA) to create a 1550 nm broadband network that enables operators to cost-effectively target forward path services. The company's pedestal amplifier, which has been designed specifically for European applications, is a modular, 870 MHz three-output device that can be migrated to an optical node supporting a variety of return transmitter options.

''The CTC win is a positive sign that Spanish operators will continue with their aggressive plans to build their markets,'' said Ron Coppock, President, International Sales, ANTEC Corp. ''We are excited about the opportunity to supply CTC with the products that will allow them to provide the latest broadband services to their customers.''

''The networks in Spain must be built with the latest broadband technological advancements,'' said Jaume Salvat, Director of Technology, CTC. ''ANTEC was able to supply proven products that met our reliability and flexibility requirements."

ANTC and GIC had no clue how to do MetroDWDM before HLIT in my opinion, and even the head technology scientist from ANTC mentioned it about a year and a half ago. Well they reverse engineered HLIT's system I think, and now the competition will heat up. HLIT will not make any announcements until after earnings, I hope they won a few contracts also.
