Hi Ratan,..Re:YES - Of course the credit tightening is for the viable small biz and individuals AND NOT for the hedge funds.

AG discussed a recent banking survey with findings that the credit tightening was for large corporations. Now whether that means Merrill Lynch and it's hedge fund operations or Allied Signal or the likes and their legitimate borrowing for business growth and expansion, I can't say. But back in June, AG warned the banks about lax lending and talk was around about increasing margins on the futures exchanges and collateral on the banking sides to shore up what the Fed considered LAX lending standards.

Only repeating what has been reported but if you would like a copy of that survey, I'll be glad to try to find it next week. Part of the fallout from the hedge fund fiasco is bound to be felt by small businesses as well ergo, rate cuts.

AG has a good record of steering the economy in the right direction so I will generally defer to his judgement and remarks. Just think, we could be sitting at Dow 6k without that first rate cut?

Regards,

Lee

The banks have taken over controlling interest in some hedge funds (for example in the case of Long Term). What this implies is that they will slowly absorb the fund's loss over several quarters rather than having to face an immediate default of several billion dollars.

I don't know if they will be willing to lend in as cavalier a fashion as they have been doing. In fact, they may not want to lend at all!

Ratan lal

Your are experiencing the liquidity crunch. That's one of the reasons rates needed to go lower.
