cut and pasted: pdQ beta software released by Qualcomm

15 October 1998 -- Qualcomm, the company which recently announced it would produce the first smartphone to utilise the Palm Computing platform, has released beta versions of the software which will run on the device.

pdQmail and pdQweb are internet e-mail and browsing clients which will integrate with the pdQ device when it is launched in 1999. Illustrating the expected level of compatibility between the PalmPilot and pdQ, the applications run perfectly on the 3Com devices. Both applications are extremely fast and powerful even at this beta stage, with pages displaying and scrolling smoothly in the text only browser and e-mail checking and sending completed rapidly.

The advanced browser feature set includes intelligent formatting, optimising the pages for display on the small form factor screen, support for HTML forms and advanced bookmark management. The e-mail client is similarly proficient, sporting integration with the browser for access to URLs embedded within e-mails, support for attachments and a clever facility enabling the first part of e-mails to be downloaded, with the rest available by clicking on an optional link.

Available publically now, the software will raise already high expectations for the actual hand held device. The beta copies may be downloaded from PalmPilotGear. Further information is available from the Qualcomm web-site.
