I've said this before on this thread. A very shrewd gentleman I knew 30 years back told me that "the market is not mathematical. If the market were mathematical than all mathematicians would be millionaires." Slightly reinterpreting what was told me, it is a very difficult job to use only logic and calculating skill to determine the future values of individual equities. We are dealing with emotions - fear and greed chief among them, but also apparently inexplicably briefly popular "styles" in investing - this week oils, next week financials, the following week, chemicals. Just cause you can read a balance sheet doesn't mean that you have all you need to know about a company and it's prospects for future stock price appreciation or decline. It's part mob or group psychology, part numbers projection and, if we are honest, sometimes part luck (good or bad).
