I had plugged the monitor into the AGP card and the MB was defaulted to display on a PCI slot. Dont' know if this is normal but caused a bit of alarm at first. Trial and error led to switching the monitor to the PCI slot and voila...picture of things working

Congratulations!

I am a little confused. Do you have two video cards , one AGP and one PCI? Did you just change the plug on the back of the computer or did you make a change in the bios?

I believe most mobo's default to PCI as the primary video card. It is only in the latest bios revisions that one has the option to select between AGP and PCI for the primary video card.
