From PC Week Nortel introduces voice/data integration gear By John Rendleman Nortel Networks this week will introduce new telecommunications equipment for providers and enterprise customers integrating voice and data traffic on an ATM-based switching platform, officials said. The equipment will consist of the Passport 8780 Packet Voice Gateway, which will be installed in providers' central offices, paired with the Passport 4740 Multiservice CPE switch for customer premises, said officials at Nortel Networks, a unit of Northern Telecom Inc. of Brampton, Ontario, that was formed following the company's acquisition of Bay Networks Inc. The switches are intended for long-distance carriers and CLECs (competitive local exchange service providers) that offer services to enterprise customers over T1 private line circuits leased from local telephone companies. They are designed to reduce the expense of those local circuits to corporate customers by allowing integration of voice and data traffic, officials said. The new Passport 8780 and 4740 switches will be demonstrated for the first time next week at Networld + Interop in Atlanta and will be generally available in January 1999, officials said. The switches are already in beta tests with a number of long-distance providers and CLECs, officials said. The Passport 8780 supports 112 T1 circuits per shelf for a total of almost 2,700 DS0 voice channels. The cost ranges from $150,000 to $400,000 per switch, which equates to about $175 per voice channel. Prices for the Passport 4740 range from $6,500 to $12,000 per T1 site, officials said.
