I agree! Before MSFT and the PC were standardized consumers had multiple OS choices to purchase and learn. Invariably, the application one needed was written for a machine incompatible with theirs. And the price: WordStar $500, VisiCalc $295, CP/M $295, all with the functionality common in those days -- little.

Perhaps just as annoying was the response the consumer received when something wouldn't work -- Your problem was always caused by the "other guy's" software. At least with one supplier, the only direction to point the finger of blame is at themselves.

I'm quite content to leave the "good-old-days" behind. P.W.
