Cooling two IDE harddrives in a midtower.

My old IBM Aptiva has two IDE drives. Its been running for three years without a problem.

5400 IDE harddrives do not run very hot. If you are not considering additional drives...CDRW..CDR..internal JAZ..a midtower should be ok. I go into my case a lot and prefer the space in the full tower. I would not make my decision based on the heat of two IDE drives. Depending on the case layout I would put the primary drive in the location of the best air circulation. The second drive would probably be idle most of the time and therefor not generate much heat.

You could add a drive cooler or a bay cooler(given a spare bay) if you wanted to maximize the drive life. There are a couple at Dirt Cheap Drives.

By the way, Clarence, one of the reasons I like to go up the street for these kinds of books, is that B/N, and Borders alike, are extremely generous with regards to returns. If you get a book you decide you don't like, and as long as you have kept it in pretty new shape, they will take it back, as long as it is still in print. In fact, even without a receipt, again assuming it is a book in their computer, they will let you exchange it for something else, or even give you a store credit, for the full list price (less any of their standard discounts, like NY Times bestsellers, etc.). You can't do that with the online booksellers, unless you want to lose some shipping charges. You can however, use the convenience of the online ones for your first buy, if you know you have a local store nearby, where you could then make the exchange if you had to.

Clarence, Humphrey didn't have this case when I bought form him in '97, but I'm sure it's a solid choice. And as I've indicated before, if you decide you don't want to actually do the assembly (or want to do as little as possible) yourself, I think he'd be hard to beat.

Thanks for the EDT notes. I may look them up.

Regards,

Dave

Mid towers...cooling

PC Power and Cooling now has drive coolers. They have a good reputation for making quality CPU fans.

Their mid tower case $69 was discussed before. I recall that Spots thought it was a good case. It has removable side panels and a removable motherboard tray.

The case does not come with a power supply. This is an advantage IMO as you can chose your own PS....Silencer ATX 235 $75. If we check power supply specs my hunch is these will come out near the top.
