Andy,

It's obvious that you are in love with the "soon to be zip killer" Sony HiFD drive.

The links below are to a two-part post on the Motely Fool internet site from someone who makes his living using computers (the guy must have been talking about Bullwinkle in the first link).

Andy, I would truly like to know your thoughts, reactions or rebuttal to, in my humble opinion, some pretty level headed logic from someone who is a real power user.

Here are the links to the two-part post entitled :

Just The Facts, Ma'am
boards.fool.com

Just The Facts, Ma'am 2
boards.fool.com

Another poster who first pointed out the links on the AOL Motely Fool IOM board said "The "bears" will have a tough time countering here......I mean, it just plain makes sense."

Again, I would truly like to know what you think. I like to take long, hard objective looks at my investments every once in a while from both a technical and "marketing" viewpoint....and feel that, due to your obvious expertise, your opinion would be most informative.

Dave

Andy thanks for passing along the info.

Just a couple of thoughts on HiFD drives.

I find it odd that after all the hype about HiFD last year
that a lot more than e-mail wouldn't announce it's arrival.
Teac has never been acclaimed for their marketing prowess.
Perhaps shipping in this case means evaluation units ?
It has been stated by technicians in the know that OEM
qualification takes 2 quarters.
I wonder why Teac would be shipping and not Sony ?
( Sony stating that they would ship in the first quarter 99 )

There is another option for a floppy drive that most
aren't even aware of, it's the 2.88 floppy.
All IBM compatible boards support this drive
and they were suppose to replace the 1.44 drive, as this
equates to a full 100% more storage. We couldn't sell
them, the incremental increase wasn't enough to entice
sales, they were totally rejected. I don't know what it
would take to supplant Zip but we could look at the drop
off in demand of the SparQ drive to give an idea. ( A $200-
$250 drive with " $35 1 GIG media " )

IMO a 100 meg disk is enough, more is better but only
at a price that makes it so compelling that I would discard
investments in my disks and interchangeability with other
drive owners.

Glad to have you back Jak maybe Edwik will tune in soon to let
us know which way IOM is going : ). Looks like we've got a Major
OEM Clik! product going, it should be a real fun product.

Regards
Reseller
