Looks like trouble to me! and good news for DELL.

Fez:
Great article thanks for posting it.

First they wanted to copy aka 'emulate' Dell, now it seems they want go 'Gateway',plus they got 'colocation' 'cohabitation','contract manufacturing' and who knows what else. One time they said it is going to be a two pronged strategy aka a 'hybrid model' using both channels and direct sales, now they got 'BTO kisoks'.

From the looks of it they definitely lack conviction and focus and are running around trying every model under the sun to catch up.I heard HP is loosing 15-20% of all potential customers due to lack of support facilities and we know Compaq has who know how many irons in the fire. All I know is somebody is going to lose some big money and market share and it ain't going to be DELL.<g>

Once again thanks for the great article.

Fez- I find it strange that (the article you listed would call) Gateway's "country" stores a "runaway" success....and then, as a support, (if I remember it correctly) only mention that they have opened more stores (or opened them on a faster basis then first thought)..

Since when does "opening stores" qualify as success? Don't these stores first need to produce tangible results (importantly, profits) to be a successs....even then, it may not be a success, if it is not the most effecient use of investment capital...

I guess Boston Chicken was a success too (from 1995-1997) when they were opening up stores left and right

To be fair, maybe the writer of the article talked to Gateway, and maybe Gateway said sales were 'gangbusters" but I dont think the article mentioned this anywhere...even still, if this were the case, the article should have read "apparent success"..

Prediction...in a couple years, Gateway will divest from these stores...

Just wanted to raise this point....Thanks for the article..
