Well just because the are getting ready to ship to OEM's doesn't mean that the chip hasn't been tested. These are to my knowledge, not nearly the first rev of the chip. However, I also believe that tape-out of the K7 was delayed slightly due to the fact that AMD was shipping product out of their research fab for a good chunk of the year.

This most likely explains the short delay in the K7 and K6-3 from their "original" targets.

From what I hear the K7 is stable enough to be sent to OEMs with little fear of MAJOR bugs. Ofcourse there may be minor problems, but nothing that should be show stopping. 1H99 is as much as 8-9 months out, that's lots of time to fix little flaws and run a good batch of CPUs.
