LT,

What does your black mystery ball tell you about gold for the coming week?

I appreciate your 'simple' view.

However I respectfully disagree that dollar would come home to cause stagflation. In much of emerging markets (1/3 of world economy) dollar is the hard currency. Only dollar has enough liquidity, ready convertability, universal acceptance, and the backing of the most powerful military force in the world. I doubt those dollar that went out would come back. In fact I believe demand for greenback is very large and growing thruout the world. Also Greenspan's successful intervention last Thursday should raise confidence in dollar and US economy. (Not that I cheered his skillful move - since I lost my shirt by being short!) So far I don't know of any strong sign that confidence in dollar is weakening.

Hope it is okay to poke my nose in here. I have been keeping track of all the comments on this thread and it is quite enjoyable and informative. My question for anyone is the following: There is a lot of talk about gold but how about platinum or palladium and a company like Stillwater Mining(SWC). SWC has been very good to me and I am trying to decide how much upside is left.
Thanks, Debra

I guess I disagree with the "NOBODY wants the money" part. Also, if the dollar gets "trashed" won't that ease the trade deficit? I think you are envisioning a one sided scenario. And with the World Economy accounting for only 10% of our GNP, I just don't see it pulling us into the gutter. Especially with the stabilizing factor of the unification of the Eurodollar and the falling European interest rates it will require. Of course I didn't understand your logic either when you got out of NE right at the peak, that worries me.

But anyway, that's all I have. If that doesn't convince you, I can't convince you. I got out of the drillers a little earlier than I otherwise would have (I actually had some capital left) thanks to your bearishness. Thought I could do the same for you. Maybe we'll both make money this time around.

Just out of curiosity, how do you figure on taking advantage of this stagflation scenario? Gold? Puts?
