Right, Dwight. If the intent were really forest health preservation, why was there an explicit override of all existing environmental laws included? Why were there quotas requiring the Forest service to make a certain number of board feet of "salvage" lumber available to the clearcutters? Why was there any clearcutting involved at all? One dead tree was enough, under the language of the law.

Of course, Clinton bears responsibility for the Salvage Rider too, many gave it as a reason to veto the whole budget recissions act, that the Salvage Rider was conveniently hidden in. A typical honest and forthright tactic on Slade's part there. But, Clinton was still operating on the assumption he could work something out with the Newt crowd, he didn't find his backbone until Newt's government shutdown power play in the fall of '94.

All the good Republican business types around here ought to ask why the Forest Service sells any lumber on Federal land at all, since the program runs at a net loss to the government. And this isn't counting environmental degradation either. More money is spent building logging roads and providing services to the lumber companies than the sales bring in. There's one department that's ripe for zeroing out, but I haven't heard any proposals from Slade on that one.

You should check out the text of the "Forest Preservation Act" law sometime, it's the most cynical piece of junk I ever read. Of course, if you're of the James Watt school of thought, it's all a good thing. I'm sure you consider yourself a Real American, as opposed to Watt's classification for those who didn't fit in that slot, "environmental extremists". And I'm sure you believe, like Watt, "there might not be another generation", so we better clearcut all we can right now, to show the Lord what good use we're making of God's bequest to us.

I get the picture on this "opinions" versus "facts" thing. Fine. In my opinion, George Bush probably lied under oath during the Iran/Contra investigation. In my opinion, Gorton's Salvage Rider was an obvious sop to the Pacific Northwest lumber companies, and had nothing whatsoever to do with "Forest Health Preservation". In my opinion, your conception of Christianity is somewhat at odds with certain words attributed to Jesus. I haven't noticed you labeling many of your statements, in the post I'm responding to or any others, as "your opinions", but I guess different rules apply to "real Americans" and "Christians" who use the correct inerrant interpretation of the Bible to guide them on which verses need to be ignored.
