Thnaks for the rundown, I also didn't see the relationship between this and NN but its interesting to see how the Canadian ownership laws work in general.

Ian --

Your knowledge of the Canadian telcos is far more extensive than mine, but I do think GTE owns 51% of BCTEL. A couple years ago I followed both companies carefully as BCTEL was leading the world in ADSL trials with much encouragement from their US partners. About the same time BCTEL awarded Amati Communications the ADSL contract, AMTX was swallowed up by TXN who didn't want to do systems. NN had been given the backbone ATM portion of the contract and when TXN bowed out, I believe NN may have been offered the ADSL portion, too, though I wouldn't swear by it. Truth is, no one wanted it b/c the cost was so high it would have to be done at a loss. Alcatel's bid all their DSL contracts at a loss in order to build market share, but I don't know if NN's decided to take that path or not.

At any rate, a BCTEL/Telus merger wouldn't hurt NN if their strength with the former would help in the latter. I'm a little fuzzy on the details, but I vaguely remember Telus leaning more towards cable than copper. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Now, completely off topic, if your spouse, girlfriend, or best friend tells you they want to see the new Oprah Winfrey movie, Beloved, be forewarned it's one of the strangest films I've seen in a long, long while. It's three hours long, so take rations. It helps to suspend disbelief, too. Let your mind wander. Don't insist on everything you see being based in fact. Just remember Toni Morrison is a poet and myths come as easily to her as untruth to Clinton. In Morrison's case she knows where fact and fiction part ways. Danny Glover is fantastic as is the actress who plays Baby Sugs.
