From the 'Zen of Shorting'
The following exchange occurred one day when a young man approached the great short Chu Mei Ash after one of his lectures to his students.
"Master, if you can spare the time I would like to speak with you." The young man said.
"Most certainly young bird dropping, what is it you wish to speak of?" Chu Mei Ash said.
"Master, I recently began investing. I am finding the market to be a terrible shock to me."
"How so?" Chu Mei Ash asked.
"Master I have long held that perfection can be found almost any where if one is aware and seeks it, as the great Buddha would have done. Like a sunset at the end of a dismal day or a lovely flower in an unkempt garden. Yet I have found nothing in this way. I sought the counsel of some market advisors and they spoke of stocks they made great gains in as if I should feel that were perfection. Can you tell if perfection can indeed be found in the market?" The young man said.
"It is well you have asked this of me. The advisors you asked had no concept of your question. They are lost in their surpassing greed. A great gain no matter how much pleasure they may derive from it is not perfection. If such were true the fattest geisha would be the perfect one.
You cannot look upon the market as you would a sunset and hope to see its perfections. A sunset fills the sky with its glory. The market in its greed and turmoil cannot show perfection on such a large scale. You must seek the small perfect flower in the unkempt garden. The bloom with perfect petals, color, and fragrance. Though they are very rare as perfection always is, flowers such as these can be found there." Chu Mei Ash said.
"It is a great relief to me that you understand my quest. But Master can you tell me what I must do to find this perfection?"
"Yes, young bird drooping," Chu Mei Ash said, "Short a stock to zero."
