I bought what you might refer to as a "clone". Not a Compaq, HP, or Packard Bell at COMPUSA, but a local store that sell hi-quality, "anything you want", components (like Intel or Trident motherboards, etc.). I told them (over a year ago) I wanted a Soundblaster 32 bit sound card, a Matrox Millenium video card with 2MB, an Iomega ditto 3.2G tape drive (I bought at COMPUSA and they said, "sure we'll put it in your new machine for you, Mister....", and a IBM 9 ms 4.5 GB hard drive. So they found all the stuff I wanted and put in together and tested it, and then sold me my custom designed final product.

I bought an external modem, color scanner, etc. and loaded ALL the software. Got 64 MB of memory and this thing has had NO downtime in over 1 year. It's the way it should be.

It also helps that I am technical in this field, but no matter. You're PhD material DOC..., you can do it too.
