Hi John

Here is a little elaboration on my previous comments.

An LED generates monochromatic light very efficiently. A SLM modulates light. With a SLM you still need to supply a light source. If you want to make a color display you need red, green and blue light. Most light sources (except LEDs, lasers, and ionized atoms) are not monochromatic so you need to filter out the undesired wavelengths or colors. Because of this filtering, most of the light produced does not get used.
A LED, on the other hand, produces light at only one wavelength and produces very little heat. This makes a LED inherently more efficient then conventional light sources for applications where individual colors are needed.
As for the comment
"( I'd be interested in any specific information as to why you find it "hard to believe
ADOT'S SLM display can compete with a display based on LEDs." )"
you may find the following link interesting.

If I remember correctly, one of the features of the SLM is its ability to withstand the high temperatures of conventional light sources-- allowing a much brighter display than could be achieved with LCD, which have low contrast ratios and are affected by temperature. (from the OTC Fanatical Network literature)

As for my assumptions on the contracts, they are just that. Assumptions based on what I believe is the likelihood of the SLM display's ability to compete with proven LED technology and the time it has taken to get the first board done.

As I see it, the only thing that will make this a success is if the SLM display produces a stunning picture that is far superior to any other display, and if ADOT gets it done before someone else comes up with something better. I fear neither is true.

The fact that the customer has already made payments on the billboard is more a cause for concern for me than a relief. I hope the delays are well provided for in the contract.
