Searle: the small caps are more sensitive to the business cycle and credit crunches. Hence they do worse in bear markets. But when these factors reverse they will far outperform the big caps as they did in 1991.

My only non-gold investments now are oil service stocks. Many of these are down 60-70% from the highs. But OSX (oil service index) has rallied 20% in the last two days. Almost as volatile as gold stocks.

I do expect another severe market selloff soon with the blue chips leading on the downside. If the small caps do as I expect by holding up much better than the blue chips, I will start to accumulate small cap funds.
