Didn't someone just come out with a dual deck CD Player/Recorder so you can dub CD's at home? What would be the difference here? Someone enlighten me.

Even the folks that established the MP3 standard admit that the process of compression creates some background noise and distortion, hence the "near-CD" quality description. If you really want to drill down on this further, I'll be happy to post excerpts from the specifications for the actual standard. The idea that MP3 exacts a penalty in sound quality to achieve such a high compression rate is no revelation to those of us that have been following MP3 since its inception.
