Jock - since I had some time:

very quickly:

15% R&D is the target - double check with Diana

What happened in the past is material because of the underspending - well I mentioned here a few weeks ago that memory is going to be good and voila INTC makes a 500 million investment in MU - that is a large
chunk and do you know why? They need MU and others to build fabs because of the chronic weakness in capital spending. This is new capacity for RDRAM etc. NEW PRODUCTS NEED NEW CAPACITY. The old stuff is worth garbage. LSI's old fab closing is an example.

The assumption of growth had nothing to do with ASIA - it's all a capacity thang! Since 1982 is not relevant at all.

Current R&D includes that thing that they mentioned in a c.call 2 quarters ago - new chip-lines starting up (?)

I mentioned that the "crap" thing is not valid because of "double counting" - I was too lazy to go back and erase the preformatted stuff.

The "net margins" for Symbios were a mistake that should have read "operating margins" - but I thought that would be clear from context (guess not!) since I had been talking about operations and had not yet mentioned interest or taxes.

The way I see it if INTC invests in MU & AMAT starts buying since these are wise people being leaders in their industry & Shane invests not for tomorrow or the day after I too am in chip investment mode!

Anyway 11, 14, 7, 9 whatever - I will be here. If it is plaguing you or anyone else so much then sell and be done with it. Hopefully the whining will then cease and desist!

Great post - I don't read this thread often, but it's nice to see a realistic assessment for once.

FWIW, I'm hoping for a rally to fill the gap in the chart around 18 before I sell.
