I think the city of Nanking and the tradegy was called "the rape of Nanking" by many historians. I think it was in the mid/late 1930s, and it is an event over which China and Japan are still having disagreements

Hello Sam, Nanking fell to the Japanese in late 1937 (nov or dec) and was held until sept 5th 1945. Chinese nationalist forces took it back and in 1949 it again fell to the communists. Mark C.
