Nick, Given present economic conditions, I wouldn't expect a player that sells for $200 US is going to have all that much appeal in SE Asia. Lest we forget, there is already a vibrant market in cheap and easy pirated music in Asian countries. Overseas, there are cheaper technologies available for mass duplication that store far more than Rio's 60 minutes of music. As for the "playback device" line, your argument is faulty. For one thing, Rio does not use "flash memory disks." The device comes with 32 MB of on-board memory. It is upgradeable in 16 MB or 32 MB increments. Getting back to theory of operation, the computer does NOT transfer data to Rio's on-board flash memory without being connected to Rio. The data stream is transferred over a parallel port connection to the Rio device, where the data is then WRITTEN by Rio to Rio's installed flash memory. The data can only be written to flash memory using Rio. The idea that the computer does the recording is absolute nonsense. I'd like for you to show me how you think I can write data to Rio's flash memory without Rio. Should I stick one of the "memory disks" in the floppy drive? <g> Getting back to the law for a moment, I suggest you read the AHRA and then ask yourself if it is possible to use Rio to make serial recordings of pirated copyrighted material. Just in case this is beyond your capabilities, I'll outline it for you step by step: 1.) Logon to the Internet with your favorite ISP and IRC client. 2.) Use the list command with #mp3 as your search key. 3.) Enter one of the conferences in question. 4.) Watch as anywhere from a dozen to as many as 100 people engage in swapping pirated music compressed using the mp3 format. 5.) Get one of your new "friends" to send you the latest tune or to direct you to an FTP site where you might find your favorite performer. 6.) Hook up your Rio to your parallel port on your computer. 7.) Download the MP3 you've just pirated from IRC or an FTP site into Rio's flash memory. 8.) At this point you can take advantage of Rio's portability and go for a jog. Listen to your ill-gotten music during your run. Step 7 wouldn't be possible if Diamond were to comply with the law and implement SCMS. Jonathan
