Interesting what the PC component prices are heading:

CPUs are strong. With price drop coming on 10/21, street prices should be starting to drop, but instead last Friday it firmed a little.

Memories - PC66, after dropping for 2 weeks, finally rebounded a little last Friday, but not before pulling down PC100, same on Friday. However, PC100 prices rebounded quite nicely today.

If you trade PC100 for 0.25um, and PC66 for 0.35um, it read oversupply in 0.35um and balanced supply in 0.25um. By end of Q1 '99, I believe PC100/sub-0.25um will be in undersupply because just about all the computers would have switched over to PC100. Wouldn't matter how many mB you can turn out in PC66, prices will be way down.

Time to shutter the 0.35um fabs.

New MetaStor S-Class Storage Systems Launch First Controller
Architecture Designed for Next Generation Fibre Channel Storage Area
Network -- SAN -- Environment - BW, 08:08 a.m. Oct 20, 1998 Eastern

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 20, 1998--
Complementing its current line of server-attached storage
systems, LSI Logic Storage Systems, Inc. today announced
availability of its next-generation MetaStor(tm) server-attached
storage systems.

The new MetaStor S-Class product line incorporates
Multi-Pathing Architecture, a revolutionary controller design
that optimizes interface technologies such as Fibre Channel
and increases scalability with more drives per controller.
Added to these features is the new SYMplicity(tm) Storage
Manager Plus (announced in related release today) that
supports easy-to-use, central storage management. With the
MetaStor S-Class family, system administrators are able to
take advantage of high performance, worry-free storage.

"The MetaStor family now has a complete stratified product
line for server-attached storage with our current set of
products and today's new high-performing S-Class optimized
for the next-generation Fibre-architected SAN environment,"
said Bill Reed, managing director of MetaStor Solutions.
"We're now able to offer an even more scalable product
family with entry-level workgroup systems ideal for NT
environments all the way to our multi-terabyte S-Class data
centers for performance-hungry applications."

"Our customers demand the performance that is core to the
new S-class platform," said Andy Pratt, president of Unique
Digital Technology, a MetaStor product reseller. "These
systems marry Fibre Channel connectivity with the latest
breakthrough in throughput technology offering a unique
combination of scalable capacity, and performance -- the very
combination our customers demand."

The new MetaStor S-Class systems expand the capabilities of
LSI Logic's existing storage systems offering. The
Multi-Pathing Architecture is the core building block of the
new S-Class controller module. This design increases
performance by 100% over traditional Ultra SCSI storage and
at least 40% over other Fibre Channel offerings, which makes
S-Class systems ideal for emerging SANs and
high-bandwidth, Internet and data warehousing applications.
The Multi-Pathing Architecture combines an Intel(R)
Pentium(R) core with 256 MB of data cache per controller and
a Fibre Channel host bus to achieve 20,000 I/Os per second.
With this architecture, the controller now supports up to 60
disks per module. In addition, since all design and fabrication
of the chipset is done by LSI Logic, system administrators are
guaranteed a storage system that's optimized for performance
from the chip level on up.

The MetaStor S-Class family offers the new SYMplicity(tm)
Storage Manager Plus software. The storage management
platform simplifies the system administrator's job by
intelligently and transparently managing all redundant RAID
components including controllers, host adapters, disk drives,
and cables from one central location. Features such as
Dynamic Capacity Expansion, Dynamic Segment Sizing and
Dynamic RAID-Level Migration allow administrators to add
capacity and tune performance without impact to data access.
And to further optimize overall system performance,
Performance Monitor gathers data to evaluate controller and
disk performance statistics. The software also supports simple
network management protocol for event notification. This
feature allows the system administrator to monitor the RAID
systems from the same management station used for other
devices on their network. The new SYMplicity Storage
Manager Plus software is a reliable, secure, transparent way
to manage RAID systems and keep data highly available.

LSI Logic is marketing the MetaStor family of scalable
server-attached storage systems exclusively through VARs,
system integrators and international distributors.

The MetaStor S-Class data center system targeted at the
high-end enterprise with 100-400+ users is priced in the
$68,000-$460,000 range (MSRP).

The MetaStor S-Class department system targeted at the
mid-range workgroup with 50-200 users is priced in the
$60,000-$215,000 range (MSRP).

All S-Class models are available for order now with
immediate shipment. Photos are available upon request.
