Purchasing a boardmaker.

DIMD has too many other things going on unrelated to graphics, and too many problems handling them. 3Dfx might be incapable of walking in and straightening them out without terminally distracting themselves.

The main qualities a boardmaker ought to have:
1) Good branding (DIMD yes)
2) Strong OEM ties (DIMD no)
3) Strong mfg/distribution/support history (DIMD so-so)
4) Complimentary corporate cultures (DIMD no)

Before doing anything though, 3Dfx must establish a strong OEM presence with its Banshee line. Once that's done they can afford the inevitable loss of focus that vertical integration will cause.

Getting DIMD would present an interesting opportunity...integrate Banshee and Aureal Vortex on board...add DIMD modem onto Micronics M-board...build the relationship with AMD to put K-6 2 into the system, add TV out and a DVD, and tada! Rock and Roll. The Monster Home Black Box.

This is not going to happen. In fact, Diamond's non-graphics products lessen the chances of its merger with 3Dfx. If you read the interview I had with them, you'll see that they explicitly said they are not interested in audio and that they would only consider companies in the graphics line of work.
