I2 braces for SAP assault - another link

computerworld.com

(Computerworld 09/28/98)

"R/3 "is basically just a transaction system, and that's not what makes your company successful. This [planning] stuff is," said Peterson, who is chairwoman of I2's independent user group"

"corporate use of supply-chain software "is minuscule" now, said Jim Shepherd, an analyst at AMR Research, Inc. in Boston. "And for the vast majority of buyers, whatever [SAP and other application vendors] come up with will be good enough. Most people like buying from one company."

My idea is that 'just being an transaction system' is the strongest feature of SAP, that creates the standard platform for integration. Then companies can create 'intelligence' around it.

re:"Two supply-chain software companies, Sweden's [ Industri-Matematik International ] and i2 Technologies of the United States, have formed an alliance that they say challenges the dominant market position of German software giant [ SAP AG ] ."

Yeah, yeah, yeah ... Just remember what happened to i2 stock when SAP merely announced that they are no longer in alliance with i2 and are developing their own supply chain. And just think what will happen to i2 and MANU and IMIC when SAP rolls their stuff out. In case anyone needs any reminders, remember Win 3 vs OS/2.

Just my $0.02.
