NEW YORK

A DATE WITH ORACLE8. The state's Social Services Department picked Oracle products for its database standard.

The department will use Oracle8 to create a new Child Care Facility System and a new welfare-to-work system.

Officials expect the Oracle8 database to save $6 million to $8 million a year by eliminating the department's reliance on microfiche.

Department officials selected Oracle8 for data warehousing, which officials will use to track and monitor food stamps eligibility, Medicaid and other public assistance programs. New York ranks second after California in public assistance case loads.
