jbe - I have been following this sort of OT "moral decline" discussion and find jlallen and Michelle guilty of selective analysis when it comes to Germany. My position is that the decline of Germany was based not in just economics or the "moral" turpitude (as too simply defined in sexual terms) of the populace as a whole, rather, in the convenient acceptance by millions of people (including many outside of Germany) of dishonesty to achieve an end.

The stress of the economic situation coupled with the steady stream of propaganda allowed the populace itself and enough of the German military to compartmentalize their own belief systems to the degree that they demonized a race of people (the jews) in order to accomplish their goals of European and eventually world, domination.

It is but one classic example of the "if you say it often enough, it will become true" philosophy, which is morally bankrupt to me.

Scapegoating is just one rather successful (albeit temporary in the long light of history) form of dishonesty that facilitates the rise of corrupt leadership.

The comparison I draw is between that, IMO one of the real fundamental causes of the fall of Germany, and the "most ethical administration in history" Clinton White House and Democratic spin machine, which seeks to convince us that "it's OK" to engage in adultery.

Mr. K.

Sorry for the delayed response. My point is that German people stood still and watched as the Nazis came for the sick, infirm, mentally deficient, the Jews, the dissidents, etc. because the regime was improving the economic lot and imbuing the population with an aberrant nationalism. How would you explain what happened to the Jews and those who tried to aid the Jews except to say that people knew it was wrong but did nothing because it did not affect them personally. I conclude that the lack of resistance to Naziism in a country with a culture as educated and rich as the German culture must rest upon a decline of moral values. The moral values were subordinated to the economic order the Nazis brought to the country. This is a dangerous course. JLA
