Nortel Networks Builds Unified Network for JazzTel, New Spanish National Network

October 22, 1998

MADRID, Spain, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ via NewsEdge Corporation -- Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT; Toronto: NTL), the leader in the supply of Unified Networks to competitive carriers around the world, is working with Spanish company SAINCO to build a new national network in Spain for Jazz Telecom S.A. (JazzTel), Spain's first competitive local exchange carrier. Nortel Networks' portion of the contract is valued at approximately US$200 million. Known as E1 4U (E1 For You), Jazztel's new network will offer business customers, from the beginning of 1999 onwards, a broader range of advanced, high quality, cost-effective services including access to the Internet.

Nortel Networks' Unified Networks create greater value for customers worldwide by delivering integrated solutions spanning data and telephony. For Jazztel, Nortel Networks is providing a comprehensive turnkey solution, from initial planning and designing, to implementation, integration and support for this advanced network. Nortel Network will work with SAINCO, a Spanish company that specializes in the integration of communications and control systems, with annual revenues of US$146 million, to deliver the network. This relationship will enable Nortel Networks to provide responsive support to Jazztel as required.

Through the deployment of Nortel Networks' Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) and Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (D-WDM) technology, Jazztel's network will be optimized for the transmission of data traffic at 160 Gbit/s per second with integrated flexibility and scalability to accommodate future bandwidth requirements. This will make it one of Spain's highest capacity networks.

Nortel Networks DMS-100 switching platform will offer a broad range of voice services, including Intelligent Networking, POTs (Plain Old Telephony Service), CLASS (Custom Local Area Subscriber Services), ADSI (Analogue Display Services Interface), ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Networking), Centrex (Central Exchange Services), VPN (Virtual Private Network) and ACD (Automatic Call Distribution).

These voice services will be complemented by an Internet Protocol (IP) data service, delivered by Nortel Networks Passport portfolio of ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) switches. Nortel Networks' CVX1800 will be used for remote access to the Internet for voice and data. Jazztel are also considering Nortel Networks IPconnect VoIP (Voice over IP) product family to supply voice and fax services over IP. The entire network will be operated, administered and managed by Nortel Networks' Integrated Network Management System.

Martin Varsavsky, chairman, Jazztel, said: "As a new operator in Spain, we have to offer our customers something extra over the competition. To do that, we need to work with a supplier who can bring new services to market quickly and profitably and ensured technological capabilities that will keep us ahead of the competition in the future. Nortel Networks is the right supplier for us with their solid experience in voice switching and their ability to ensure that the network is also rugged and flexible enough to meet increasing consumer demand for data services."

Jazz Telecom, S.A. (Jazztel) aims to become the leader in broadband services in Spain for business. The company already has offices in Madrid, Barcelona and Malaga with over 700 customers. The company was founded by Martin Varsavsky (who started Viatel and remains its largest shareholder to date). The company will build, over the next five years, an optical fiber network linking Spain's major cities and submarine cable to the UK. This network is to be called E14U (E1 being the term for a 2Mb fiber optic cable). Jazztel will provide services for both businesses and other carriers. The key growth areas are seen in Internet, Centrex, Video conferencing and Lan-to-Lan. The company has a young dynamic management team with proven records in their fields.
