Cabletron Delivers Wide Area Network Interfaces for Its Smartswitch Router - the Industry's First Switch/Router With WAN
October 19, 1998 08:12 AM

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 19, 1998--

Extends End-to-End Application-level Control Throughout Entire Enterprise

Cabletron Systems CS , the premier provider of enterprise-class networking solutions, introduced another industry first - Wide Area Network (WAN) interface support for its SmartSwitch Router 2000, 8000 and 8600 family. The WAN modules extend Layer 4 application-level control, QoS and security features across the enterprise delivering private networks with lower cost, greater bandwidth utilization and better application performance, while providing the services required for next-generation extranets and multimedia networks.

The SSR WAN interfaces include a two- and four-port serial interfaces operating at port speeds up to 8 Mbps, and a two-port High-Speed Serial Interface (HSSI) operating at ports speeds up to 52 Mbps. These new modules deliver wire-speed support for Layers 2, 3 and 4 switching with full-function IP and IPX routing over Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) or Frame Relay connections. The quad port serial interfaces include hardware accelerated compression and optional hardware accelerated encryption enabling high-peformance, secure networking forming the basis for extranet applications.

"We've seen dramatic performance improvements since we've implemented the SmartSwitch Router," said Don Slade, President of the regional service provider ISOA. "From my perspective the SSR is the ideal router for service providers: Wire-speed gigabit switching and routing, WAN interfaces, and a full complement of routing protocols including BGP-4. Using BGP we peered with UUNET, MCI and AGIS. Our customers reported a radical reduction in latency. They actually were calling us to see why their performance had increased so dramatically--the answer was simple; the SmartSwitch Router."

The application-aware QoS and congestion control capabilities of the SSR provide the industry's best WAN bandwidth utilization and application performance, all at one half the per WAN port price of software-based backbone routers. The unique integration of LAN switching and WAN capabilities in the SSR provides for consistent end-to-end services and network management across the entire enterprise, further improving network performance and reducing total cost of ownership.

New Branch Office Routers

Remote or branch offices needing robust connectivity to the enterprise network, internet access or VPN services can take advantage of the new SmartSwitch Router 500 products - the SSR 510 and SSR 520, also announced this week. Offering multiprotocol routing, full WAN support (PPP, Frame Relay, X.25 or ISDN), and VPN capabilities such as IPSec, IKE, NAT and L2TP, these products are easily configured and are designed to maximize bandwidth utilization while minimizing your WAN costs.

With the SSR 500 branch office routers and the SSR 100 and 200 SOHO routers also announced today, Cabletron is the first in the industry to deliver integrated VPN capabilities across a SOHO and branch office router product line, allowing customers to reduce costs and generate increased business through extranets today.
