Sorry CB, didn't mean to include the word "potato"….. Kind of seems like an easy question until you try to answer it, doesn't it? The word has several definitions, and they cross at a dangerous intersection. According to Webster's, a wench can be: "a young woman" or "girl;"; "a female servant;"; "a lewd woman" or "prostitute" "Wench" is often thrown at women as a generic, vague epithet implying some sort of displeasure. But the word crystallizes the situation most women find themselves in today. This single, ambiguous word means three very different things at the same time; similarly, women today are often seen primarily as those same three things. A woman today is expected to be young (or look like she is), often a servant (especially if she has a family) and a sexual object, all at the same time. These roles often conflict with one another: adolescent girls' sexuality is usually condemned even as society tells them that's all they have to offer; women are expected to be dazzling in the bedroom but submissive and demure in daily life; women's youthful appearance is considered their most important quality even as society relies on their services as homemakers, cheap laborers, sexual servants and baby incubators. That's a lot of irony and symbolism for one little word. Of course, I prefer the un-analyzed versions…..
