NOVELL: RSPCA communicates naturally with GroupWise

OCT 19, 1998, M2 Communications - The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) is rolling out Novell GroupWise and Novell NetWare to improve communication among 400 of its employees.

Novell NetWare 4.11 is being used to create a wide area network among its ten satellite offices, forming part of the infrastructure which will enable the RSPCA to log the 1.3 million help calls which it receives from the public each year. NetWare was chosen as a natural progression from the RSPCA's existing installation of NetWare 3.12, the reliability of which was without question.

According to Wendy Thorley, head of information systems at the RSPCA, the implementation of Novell NetWare and GroupWise is part of a long-term strategy to enhance communications among its 10 satellite and regional offices:

"Every year we receive over 1.3 million help calls from members of the public. These need to be logged over the network and it is essential that our staff have fast and reliable access to this information. NetWare provides us with a stable platform for our network, which results in minimum downtime, increased productivity and improved communication. We chose Novell because they have proven products that offer real savings in network administration costs. For us there was no alternative."

Ease of administration and lowering the cost of network ownership were also important to RSPCA. Thorley continued: "NDS enables us to centrally administer all our sites from one location, which makes network administration so much easier. In the longer term we are looking at using NDS as a management tool for all systems, including voice and personnel security."

Exploiting the existing investment in Novell GroupWise and Novell NetWare, the RSPCA is currently planning implementation of intranet and Internet facilities for its users to enhance its communications. The ultimate goal is to connect all RSPCA charities together. The RSPCA is also investigating the use of GroupWise as the transport mechanism for a mobile data solution for its 320 inspectors who operate at the sharp end of animal welfare.

Founded in 1983, Novell (NASDAQ: NOVL) is the world's leading provider of network software.
