Deutsche Telekom Uses Siemens / Newbridge ATM Platform to
Launch Next-Generation Switched Broadband Service

NEWS RELEASE TRANSMITTED BY CANADIAN CORPORATE NEWS
FOR: NEWBRIDGE NETWORKS CORPORATION

TSE SYMBOL: NNC
NYSE SYMBOL: NN

OCTOBER 21, 1998
ATLANTA, GEORGIA--Highly Flexible Service Offers Duration- and
Parameter-Based Billing.
Siemens and Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN; TSE: NNC) today
announced that Deutsche Telekom, the third largest
telecommunications service provider in the world, is taking the
lead in launching a next-generation switched broadband service for
corporate customers, using the industry-leading Siemens /
Newbridge MainStreetXpress(tm) 36170 MultiServices Switch and the
MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager. Launched under the brand
name, T-Net ATM, this dynamic, flexible service offering delivers
switched virtual circuit (SVC) services to meet customers'
changing bandwidth and network requirements, depending on the
applications being used.
The key benefits of the new service include duration- and
parameter-based billing and service level management -- features
that set this new service apart from other offerings available
today. Defining customer-specific limits on dial-up traffic
parameters ensures predictable service usage costs for Deutsche
Telekom's customers.
"Deutsche Telekom's decision to launch this innovative broadband
service using the Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress 36170
MultiServices Switch further strengthens the long-standing,
successful relationship we have established with Europe's largest
telecommunications carrier," said John Everard, Executive Vice
President and General Manager, Europe, Middle East and Africa,
Newbridge Networks. "Like many carriers throughout the world, Deutsche Telekom
requires a proven product that delivers flexibility, security and
superior end-to-end network and service management," added Thomas
Rambold, President Information and Broadband Networks of Siemens
Information and Communications Networks.
In addition to offering dynamic dial-up traffic parameters, T-Net
ATM enables corporate customers to specify service categories that
are supported throughout the network. For example, customers can
specify constant, fixed or variable bit-rate service for real and
non-real time traffic, depending on the application. This
flexibility will enable Deutsche Telekom to meet customer demand
for innovative, high-bandwidth applications well into the future.
"We selected the Siemens / Newbridge 36170 MultiServices Switch to
launch our new service because Siemens and Newbridge understand
our business requirements, and were able to provide the best
possible solution for our immediate and long-term needs," said
Norbert Hentges, Product Manager ATM, Deutsche Telekom. "Our
product team worked very closely with the two companies, creating
and testing a service that is in a class of its own. Another key
factor in our decision to work with Siemens and Newbridge was, of
course, the superior end-to-end network and service management
capabilities being provided by the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager."
The industry-leading MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager offers
network monitoring, technical support and troubleshooting of
service providers' entire networks, all from a single platform. It
will provide network and service management for Deutsche Telekom's
long-standing corporate customers, including banks, manufacturing
companies and insurance companies.
The Information and Communications Networks Group (ICN) of Siemens
AG and Newbridge Networks, two world leaders in ATM, formed a
strategic alliance in 1996 to provide carriers worldwide with the
most comprehensive and advanced ATM solution set. Within this
agreement, the two companies have unified their ATM product lines
under the MainStreetXpress brand and assembled the industry's most
extensive ATM research and development operation, consisting of
more than 2,000 engineers in five countries.
