You're calling jbe a "leftist?" I find she has an admirably nuanced view of many issues. Perhaps when a poster goes silent, whether leftist or rightist, he or she has better things to do that waste time trying to find common ground with a bunch of hateful, sexually repressed adolescents. Or maybe, he/she is on deadline (!!!!!) ciao bello!

I've long held that once a leftist goes silent, said leftist has run out of valid points to add to the discussion. Untrue. Its just that there are some issues, such as abortion, where the left (ok a sweeping generalization but Ill use myself as an example) sees the issue as a policy/legal matter vs. the right which sees it through the eyes of religion - a specific religion in fact. So just by definition the right is going to yell louder and longer on the issue. And theres no way to scientifically support any opinion so it comes down to a personal belief on either side. BTW, when Dwight says to me that a 3 mos old fetus has fingernails, and that means this thing is sustainable life to him, and I dont counter the argument, it generally means I see it as irrelevant.

The eyes that fix you in a formulated phrase, And when I am formulated, sprawling on a pin, When I am pinned and wriggling on the wall, Then how should I begin To spit out all the butt-ends of my days and ways? I will try to spit out a butt-end or two, anyway. If I ever "go silent" on this or any similar SI thread, it will be for one of two reasons, or for a combination of both: 1) I will finally see that all this posting is keeping me from attending to my own work, and will resolve to wean myself from an addiction that is worse than salted peanuts; and 2) I will conclude that it is useless to try to bridge the "ideological gap" that clearly exists here, and that mutual understanding, let alone consensus, is impossible. jbe
