Elsa, I believe this, as so very-very much of our communication/reception of knowledge, is contaminated by bungling....

The person who used "placebo" as an active, nominative, noun type of thing is an example of this. He/she/it has spoken imprecisely and therefore made his/her/its statements tomfoolery.

It appears, to me, that the intent of the piece would more valuably be expressed if the author had prefaced the word "placebo" with the phrase "the results that are produced by the use of...."

Then we would have: "The results that are produced by the use of"
placebos (to relieve) pain can be blocked....and so on .

I speak vacantly, as I have had a grand day - and am, thus, with little determination to establish any this's or that's of any sort whatsoever.
