Interview with AMD in MaximumPC...

If Intel is the king of the CPU market, what is AMD?

Intel is a monolith. They basically try to do everything themselves, and they're doing a pretty damn good job of it, but only because other can't, or don't, do it just as well. We can't compete with them by being a "little" Intel.

The difference between the two companies is that we're trying to work with partners so they gain more by working with us, rather than working with Intel. 3dfx gains more working with us because we won't start producing a competing product, such as Intel's i740, and then try to get 3dfx kicked out of the market. They have no such fear. We're trying to create a virtual alliance to be in a competitive position more powerful than if we tried to do everything ourselves.

Last winter, when we first launched out product, my biggest chipset provider met with our marketing and sales guys and said, "You guys are dead. Slot 1 is just going to wipe you out." But two days after the launch, the CEO called to tell me he has a huge backlog on Super 7 chipsets and he wants me to know he was now a total believer in the Super 7 initiative.

That is what makes us stronger. I alone am not as strong as I am when people and companies walk alongside me.

Besides the integrated L2 cache, what's the difference between K6-2 and K6-3?

There are some improvements we made to the communication pipelines between the 3d unit inside k6-3 and the graphics chip.

*********************

Now it is my understanding that the graphics pipeline is mostly handled by the board chipset and not the CPU itself (like AGP). Is this just an improvement on the 3dnow instructions or something new?

Pat

(Note for the humor-impaired: What follows is a rather sophomoric
attempt at _satire_ on this rather dull day. Enjoy!)

C. Anderson Sues S. Tzu Over Patent Infringement

SEATTLE, Wash., Oct. 19 /PRNewsfire/ -- Chip Anderson, an
investor in 3Dfx Interactive(R), Inc. (Nasdaq: TDFX), announced
today that he has filed suit against Sun Tzu, another investor
in 3Dfx Interactive(R), Inc. (Nasdaq: TDFX) in the Western
Washington District Federal Court asserting patent infringement.
Anderson claims that Tzu is using Anderson's unique patented
descriptive-clause-in-the-middle-of-the-name-signature technology
in Tzu's latest post on Silicon Investor. The suit follows
aboslutely zero attempts by Anderson to reach a mutually
acceptable solution with Tzu.

"I see litigation as an unfortunate last resort," said
Anderson. "I regret having to pursue this matter legally, but
it is imperative that I protect my intellectual property on
behalf of myself, my readers, and my humor industry partners.
My goal is to resolve this without disrupting that industry."

Anderson developed his signature technology over the last
several years with it first appearing on Silicon Investor in 1997.

The number of posts on this board today rivals that of TDFX volume. What a boring day. Feel free to post all kinds of OT topics on days like this. BTW does anyone here have a Guillemot Banshee card? I have a few questions about it.
