Gregor,

Go North young man.............There's gold in them thar' hills. North Carolina also has many gem stones.

Further North......I have family in Rumford, Maine that pan for gold during the summer in a river that runs along the back of their property. They have several prescription vials (quarter roll size) filled with gold flakes. I was amazed at the weight of each vial. Significantly heavier that if they contained quarters.
