The pimp player halted...

Diamond Multimedia Systems Inc. (DIMD) will delay shipment of the
company's new portable music player, Rio PMP300. The company acted
after the record industry's trade group was successful in winning
a temporary restraining order against the product in federal court
in Los Angeles Friday. Another hearing is set for Oct. 26 to weigh
making the order permanent, and prohibiting Diamond from producing
the player that allows the download of MP3-format encoded music
files off the Internet to the player for mobile playback. The
Recording Industry Association of America argues the device
violates the 1992 federal Audio Home Recording Act by permitting
and encouraging copyright violations. "We understand that this is
a very intricate area of the law and the court was very attentive
to novel legal issues," said Andrew Bridges, attorney for Wilson
Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, representing Diamond Multimedia.
