re:small caps, I think I'll check with Baron tomorrow if they know if their asset or small cap fund will pay a capital gain. He's been pretty good with that,I think asset payed no capital gain last year. Their small cap is too new to have much of a track record and I'm a little concerned that his asset fund's assets have balooned to over 4 billion

Marc: I would guess the at the Vanguard Small Cap Fund (Russell 2000 index) would be the way to go if distributions were a concern. Oakmark Small Cap may have already had a distribution but check its track record. It was hot at one time. Manager -- Scott Reid. Otherwise, try to find a fund that goes x cap gain at end of October. Some families might. Forget Price. They go x cap gain in December for all their funds. Or MDY might be a play at least the midcaps. You could margin it if you want to get a position and then make a reallocation in 1999 or whenever.
